Down in the deepest ocean, there once lived a mermaid princess called Ariel. She was the youngest daughter of King Triton, ruler of the mer-people, and she had the most beautiful singing voice in the whole of his kingdom. Her father loved her dearly but she was always getting into trouble.

Triton with all his daughters
Ariel longed to be part of the human world and spent her time exploring old shipwrecks. The Sea-King feared for her safety and, thinking humans dangerous, warned her to stay away from them. But the little mermaid was certain he was wrong.

When Ariel was 16 years old, King Triton arrayed for her to sing in a magnificent concert, and mer-people from all over the kingdom to hear her. That evening Ariel was so busy exploring with her friend Flounder that she forgot all about the concert! She had found some human treasures and taken them to the surface to ask Scuttle the Seagull what they were.

King Triton was furious. "you could have been seen by one of the barbarian, by one of those humans!" he raged. "And I'm never to hear of you going to the surface again. Is that clear?"Ariel tried to protest but her father wouldn't listen. He ordered Sebastian, Ariel's music teacher, to keep an eye on her. But it wasn't an easy task!

One night Sebastian followed Ariel and Flounder to the surface to watch a Ship! On board the Crew were celebrating the birthday of a handsome young prince called Eric, and Ariel watched them in delight.

Prince Eric and his crew on the ship
Soon storm clouds gathered overhead. Huge waves wrecked the ship and Eric was flung into the sea. Ariel swam quickly to his rescue and pulled him towards shore.

"No Look! He's breathing!" cried Ariel. She gazed at Eric and fell deeply in love.THen as she sang to him, his eyes began to open. But, hearing a voice in the distance, Ariel slipped back into the water and hid behind a nearby rock. She watched as Eric's servant led him away. When they were out of sight, Ariel swan home. "Someday," she vowed to herself, "I'm going to be Part of that human world."

Sebastian had seen everything, and it wasn't long before the Sea-King learnt that Ariel was in love with a human. Triton was very angry. Determined to teach his daughter a lesson, he stormed into her secret grotto and destroyed all her beloved human treasures.

Flotsam, Ursula, and Jetsam
Heartbroken, Ariel sat down and wept. Above her two sly-looking eels called Flotsam and Jetsam emerged from the shadows. The little mermaid looked up. "Poor sweet child," they hissed. "Don't be scared. We represent someone who can make all your dreams come true. Ursula has great powers."

"The Sea-Witch!" gasped Ariel. She knew that Ursula was her father's worst enemy, who had been banished from his kingdom many years ago and who was now seeking revenge. Ariel hesitated. Then, thinking that it was her only chance to win Prince Eric's love, the little mermaid swam away with the evil eels-quickly followed by Flounder and Sebastian.

Rundown Show: Episode 3 - Stereotyping Arabs in Hollywood productions

This week on the Rundown we talked about Arab stereotypes in Hollywood productions. We discussed many movies, shows, and other TV and cinema productions that have framed a certain ideology that perceives Arabs in the worst ways. Even though we highlighted the fact that some shows have tried to steer away from this way of thinking but the fact remains that many western shows still portray Arab as terrorists or as people living in the desert with camels. This week we were also able to interview Dr. Mohammed El Masry, a Mass Communications professor at AUC, who talked to us about issue that we earlier discussed in our roundtable discussion.

Behind the fashion scene in Egypt - Final Project Promo

This is a promo for my final project that will be played out on May 15 and May 19 at 10 a.m. in AUC's New Cairo campus, BEC building room 1060.

The Final project will mainly be about Egyptian fashion designers who have decided to study fashion abroad and develop their brands in the Egyptian fashion market.

You can also check it out on Sound-cloud bit.ly http://

Final Project Interview segment (with Amani El Chrief)

In the interview with Amani El Chrief, one of the well-known fashion designers in Egypt, she explains to me her difficulties and achievement after deciding to choose a career in fashion. After she had developed her own gallery in New Jersey, USA, she came to Egypt to develop the same concept in her hometown Cairo. There were two very important things I concluded from this interview, and they are, first the idea or definition of fashion designer in Egypt is different from that in the western fashion industry. Second that while Egypt produces the finest cotton in the world, but designers like Amani buy such fabrics and materials from out side Egypt because none of it is sold inside, she would have to travel to cities like Milan, Italy to get the best quality of fabrics for her collections.

My Favorite Place on Campus (Nat Sound Essay)

Nat Sound Essay: My Favorite Place on Campus:-

Script: In my four years as a university student, I have come to favor some places on campus. Places where I met my friends and places where I took the time to focus on my schoolwork and research.

The Library is one of the places that I spent a lot of my time. When I first enter the library I can always hear students sitting around, either working on something or just talking. Some of them are at their computers typing with their undivided attention on their screens. Next, and after I’m done with whatever work I came to the library to finish, I take a walk down the hall where the printing station is. Inside all the printers are on and papers are sliding out of them.

However, my favorite place on campus was never the library like some of my friends, but it has always the garden behind it. Filled with trees and green grass, it’s the perfect place to relax and enjoy some sunshine with my friends during the summers and winters.

Mexico's missing island mystery (Journal #1)

On September 10, 2009, the BBC World stories Documentaries website launched a, 23 mint audio, story about an island that was missing in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico. According the documentary the Bermeja Island appeared on several "national and international maps from the 16th century,” and now one can find it and there is no explanation to how or why the island has vanished. David Cuen, who works for the Latin American section of the BBC world service and who is Mexican, is narrating his investigation on the island's mysterious disappearance.

This story was very interesting because, in my opinion, the title alone had the potential of grabbing the audiences' attention because it talks about something new and is very informative at the same time. The other point which makes the story even more interesting because not only does Cuen describe it as a treasure hunt, but also because the island would provide Mexico with "millions of dollars worth of oil deposits" and so giving a huge opportunity for the Mexican economy.

The audio quality was very good, it was clear and the narration was understandable. For example, the documentary opened with Nat sound of a sea cost or a sea chore where the audience could clearly hear the noises that came with such a scene like wave crashing and seagulls' scream giving a sense of the story's setting. Another example of that is when he provides some Nat sound of the streets of Mexico City like car horns.

Despite the fact that the story was mostly research and investigations, in other words full of facts, it didn't affect the way such information was presented or spoken. This only drives me to believe that the writing quality of the story was very well written, and even though the documentary was a, 23 mints, bit too long but that could be understandable given all the important points that had to be included to give a full story.

The beginning of the documentary was very strong and attention grabbing, however while the website was easy to navigate the audio file wasn't so I wasn't able to reach the end. Even the link provided by the website to download the documentary wasn't what I thought it also kept streaming online and was the same as the one on the original page of the story. I would like to go back and listen to the rest of it and also find out what Cuen uncovered in the end but I guess for now this will do!
